The lads came out flying, controlling possession and carving out chance after chance. Despite the pressure, a defensive slip saw us go 1–0 down against the run of play. But the response was electric: Jack Lomax finished off a slick team move to level things up, and moments later, Jacob Whittaker unleashed a strike that will live long in memory—arguably the best goal seen in 17 years of grassroots football. A thunderbolt. A masterpiece. 2–1 up and cruising.
Then came the twist. An own goal straight after the restart knocked the wind out of us, and despite flashes of quality, we couldn’t regain our rhythm. With just 30 seconds left on the clock, Clitheroe hit us on the counter to snatch a 3–2 win. A cruel end to a game that had promised so much.
